RBS to showcase Australia's gifted emerging contemporary artists

07 September 2009

This September RBS will unveil the works of gifted up and coming Australian contemporary artists who have been selected to participate in the sixth annual RBS Emerging Artist Award.

53 artists selected by independent curator Susan Manford will display works across a broad range of media and forms including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video, installation and glass. Works will be displayed in a series of exhibitions held at the Renzo Piano RBS Tower in Sydney culminating in a presentation evening on 20 October to announce the Award winner.

The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges from the art and business communities. RBS is pleased to once again welcome Director of the Art Gallery of NSW Edmond Capon, The Museum of Contemporary Art’s Curator Glenn Barkley and leading Australian painter and Archibald Finalist Ben Quilty. They will be joined by RBS Executives Simon Perrott and Peter Young AM.

In unveiling this year’s selected artists Mr Young said “We are extremely proud of the RBS Emerging Artist Award; it brings the remarkable talents of emerging contemporary artists into the corporate domain and provides valuable exposure for them in the early stages of their careers.

Every year we are excited by the new talent that we come across in putting the exhibitions together. Of course deciding on one winner is always tricky. As a panel we look for entries that demonstrate imaginative flair, sound technical skill and above all innovation in their approach to contemporary art.” Mr Young said.

The Award winner will receive a cash prize of $15,000, an around the world airline ticket and a coveted place in an international artistic development program. Their work will also form part of the RBS Australia corporate art collection alongside previous winners such as Petrina Hicks (08), Arlo Mountford (07) Trent Parke (06) Julie Fragar (05) and Lionel Bawden (04).

About The RBS Emerging Artist Award:
The RBS Emerging Artist Award (formally the ABN AMRO Emerging Artist Award), now in its sixth year, is one of the largest corporate exhibitions of emerging contemporary art in Australia. The Award was founded by RBS Senior Advisor Peter Young as a way of bringing the business and art communities together to provide valuable exposure to talented artists who are in the early stages of their careers.

Artists are selected on the basis that they reside in Australia, do not consistently sell their work for more than $15,000 and whose work is engaging on a conceptual and aesthetic level. Represented and unrepresented artists are invited to submit one artwork produced during 2008/09.
